African Grey behavior by age :Living with a Grey: What to Expect in the First 12 Months
Bringing home an African Grey is often compared to bringing home a toddler that never grows up. The first year is a foundational period—a time of rapid learning, deep bonding, and a few “growing pains.” Whether you have chosen a Congo African Grey or a Timneh, the first 12 months will set the tone for the next 60 years.
At Exotic Parrot Store, we want your transition to be seamless. Here is a month-by-month look at the milestones and behaviors you can expect during your first year together.
Months 1–3: The “Honeymoon” & Acclimation
During the first 90 days, your bird is essentially an explorer in a new world.
- The Adjustment: Your bird might be unusually quiet for the first two weeks. They are observing you, your routine, and the safety of their African Grey parrot cage.
- Bonding Begins: This is the most critical time for “passive bonding.” Sit near their cage, read aloud, and offer treats through the bars. You are proving that you are a source of comfort and food.
- The First Words: For many baby African Greys for sale, this is when the first “human” sounds emerge—often a whistle or the sound of a microwave beep!
Months 4–8: The “Testing” Phase
As your bird begins to feel “at home,” their confidence grows—and with it, their curiosity.
- Exploring Boundaries: Just like a human toddler, your Grey may start “testing” you. They might nip to see your reaction or scream to see if you come running.
- The Importance of Training: This is the perfect time to start the “Step Up” and “Target Training” we discussed in our African Grey intelligence guide. Consistent, positive reinforcement now will prevent behavioral issues later.
- The First Molt: Around the 6-to-8-month mark, your bird will go through their first juvenile molt. They may be a bit more irritable or “itchy” during this time. A lukewarm misting with water can help soothe their skin.
Months 9–12: Finding Their Voice
By the end of the first year, the personality of your Congo or Timneh African Grey will be fully on display.
- Vocabulary Explosion: This is typically the “Golden Age” for speech. If you have been consistent with your training, you’ll find them using words in the correct context, such as saying “Hello” when you enter the room or “Night-night” when the cage cover comes out.
- Establishing a Routine: By now, your bird will have memorized your daily schedule. They will know exactly when breakfast is served and when it’s time to move to their Java Tabletop Tree for family time.
Three Tips for a Successful First Year
Consistency is King
African Greys crave stability. Try to keep feeding times and “out-of-cage” times consistent. A predictable world is a safe world for a sensitive Grey.
2. Socialize, Socialize, Socialize
Don’t let your bird become a “one-person bird.” During this first year, safely introduce them to different family members, friends, and even different rooms in the house. This builds the adaptability that makes Timneh African Greys so popular.
3. Document the Journey
Keep a small journal or a dedicated social media page for your bird. Tracking their weight, the new words they learn, and their favorite foods helps you monitor their health and celebrate the milestones of their “First Birthday.”
